General advice

  • On unfamiliar trails, moderate your speed to limit the risks associated with excessive speed.

  • Remain constantly vigilant for holes, wadis and invisible obstacles.

  • Small broken dunes can cause unexpected falls: keep your eyes open.

  • If visibility is reduced by dust, slow down to better anticipate obstacles and limit risks.

  • Respect the distances between motorcyclists to avoid collisions in the event of a sudden stop.

Dehydration and heat

  • Drink regularly, even if you’re not thirsty, to avoid dehydration.

  • A Camelbak is ideal for hydrating without stopping.

  • Avoid breaks in direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day to reduce the risk of heatstroke.

Fauna and flora

  • Keep an eye on your tires when camel grass is present, as its rigidity can be dangerous.

  • Avoid thorns to prevent punctures.

  • During breaks, keep your helmet and gloves off the ground to avoid being bitten by scorpions or snakes.

Navigation and orientation

  • For safe navigation, stay with the guide and respect the prescribed distances.

  • If you lose sight of the group, stay put and wait for instructions to facilitate the reunion.

Maintenance and repairs

  • Be prepared for punctures and falls, and adapt your speed to the terrain.

  • In an emergency, stay calm, wait for the next guide and provide first aid if necessary.

💡 Additional tip:
Remember to pack full equipment (goggles, gloves, protection, GPS) and manage your energy: regular breaks, diet and sleep are essential to enjoy the desert safely.

Digital roadbook vs paper roadbook for the rally-raid

For rally-raiders, knowing how to read a roadbook is essential. This is the official document describing the rally route: tracks, directions, dangers, headings ➡️ ‼️ … Without it, it’s impossible to follow the race.

👉 In other words, to compete in rally raids, you absolutely must know how to read a roadbook.
The format may vary depending on the event: some rallies have switched to digital roadbooks (on tablets), while others still use paper roadbooks with a dispenser.

For the 2025 Carta Rally, we have decided to equip our drivers with F2R Y1000 tablets, replacing the traditional paper roadbooks.
These tablets display the routes provided by the organization via the Terrapirata app, ensuring smoother and more accurate navigation.

💻 Tip for beginners: fun training

To familiarize yourself with reading a roadbook, start with a video game like Dakar, available on computer and PlayStation. It’s an excellent alternative for learning how to read a roadbook.

🔍 How to read a roadbook?

A roadbook, whether paper or digital, is always structured in the same way. Understanding how to read it is essential for following the route correctly and anticipating each obstacle.

A roadbook is divided into three columns, read from left to right. Each column contains key information: distance, direction, hazards, or notes.

Symbols and icons are universal, so once you master them, you can anticipate turns, obstacles, and changes in terrain before you even encounter them.

1.⁠ ⁠Left column: distances and instructions

This column mainly shows distance information:

1- Total distance traveled so far

2- Distance from the previous note

3- Instruction number, to follow the process step by step

It may also include:

  • Waypoints or checkpoints
  • Additional navigation markers

Any information that helps track your progress

⚠️ This column is essential for synchronizing the roadbook with the odometer and anticipating navigation.

2.⁠ ⁠Center column: road visualization

The center column is the visual part of the roadbook. Here you will find:

Trajectory patterns: ⬆️ ➡️ ↗️, indicating the type of path and the direction to follow

  • Visual landmarks: ruins, houses, lakes, fences… to stay oriented
  • Degree caps: for precise positioning when needed

3.⁠ ⁠Right column: additional information

The right column provides additional details, often critical for safety and navigation:

  • Speed limit
  • Specific hazards ⁉️
  • Precise distances to certain obstacles (e.g., “AND AT 200 m…”)

It supplements the information in the other two columns so that you can anticipate all situations.

👀 Tools for reading a roadbook

To use a roadbook effectively, it is important to have the right tools:

1- ICO / Tripmaster / Course repeater: used to display the course and check the distance, often connected to the wheel as a backup odometer.

2- Odometer (mileage counter): shows the distance traveled and allows you to follow the roadbook accurately. Some models operate using GPS.

3- This ICO is used as a backup odometer and is directly connected to the wheel.

Off-roading with a Ténéré 700 or any other trail bike can be an exciting experience, but it requires a certain level of technical skill, especially depending on the type of terrain. To ride safely and avoid risks, it’s essential to prepare and take a training course.

That’s why the Mutuelle des Motards, as a two-wheeler insurer, offers one-day training courses: the Open Trails. These courses are organized in various regions of France and are accessible to motorcyclists of all levels.

The Open Trail is a day dedicated to motorcycle training, organized by the Mutuelle des Motards. This event focuses on friendliness and the passion for off-roading, while emphasizing safety. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in practical workshops on handling, obstacles, techniques, and riding on a secure circuit, guided by professional instructors.

Program of the day

In the morning, participants are divided into small groups based on their skill level to ensure personalized learning. Each group is assigned a dedicated instructor: professional riders and enthusiasts from the Mutuelle des Motards. These instructors will guide you throughout the day to ensure your safety and progression.

Morning workshops:

  • Handling: Learn how to control your bike on different types of terrain.
  • Obstacle Crossing: Master the techniques to safely navigate obstacles.

Anyone can do rally-raid!

And even though the race, adrenaline, and the challenge of the clock often drive the riders, it’s important to know your limits and choose the right category to truly enjoy this technical discipline.

Rally-raid, as a reminder, is a competition: an off-road race format with a timed stage, a ranking, and, most importantly, navigation using a roadbook.

There are more and more rally-raids, ranging from rounds of the World Rally-Raid Championship, including the legendary Dakar, to amateur rally-raids.

These amateur rally-raids are more accessible, both in terms of budget and categories. They are particularly open to the Raid category and twin-cylinder bikes.

Which rally-raids are accessible for twin-cylinder bikes?

Overall, all amateur rally-raids have now integrated a new category allowing twin-cylinder bikes to take part in the race.

But three legendary amateur rally-raids stand out:

Africa Eco Race

The Africa Eco Race is like the Dakar for amateurs. Following in the footsteps of the Paris-Dakar, this rally is a return to the roots with a 6,000 km route. Starting from Monaco, participants cross Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, finishing at the legendary Lake Rose.

It’s a demanding rally-raid consisting of 12 stages, where the main enemy is fatigue. Proper preparation is essential, both for the bike and the rider!

Carta Rallye

A more accessible challenge than the Africa Eco Race, the Carta Rally is a rally-raid in Morocco, offering a great challenge with 2,000 km over 7 stages .The navigation is tight with the roadbook, promising an interesting challenge.

Starting from Plage Blanche, the route heads north and ends around Merzouga. This rally-raid is often chosen as preparation for a future participation in the Africa Eco Race.

TransAnatolia

The third rally-raid in this selection, with a different destination: Turkey! It’s a demanding rally-raid, but more accessible due to its terrain. Here, there’s no sand or dunes, but a tough, endurance-testing terrain, perfect for a complete change of scenery in a mountainous environment.

With its 2,800 km, this rally-raid combines speed and navigation challenges.

The advantage of these three rally-raids?

They are accessible to everyone and for all levels thanks to the Raid category.

How to choose your category in rally-raid?

How to know if you should register in the Raid or Racing category?
Here are the factors to consider to guide your choice:

  • In Racing, navigation is done exclusively using a roadbook. Therefore, it is essential to master this technique in order to register in this category.
  • In Raid, navigation is optional: with GPX tracks or a roadbook.

The standard Ténéré 700 features a 16-liter fuel tank, while the World Raid version comes with a 23-liter tank. However, these capacities may still fall short for certain stages.

Options to increase fuel range:

    • – GYTR auxiliary tanks: Add 13.6 liters at the rear, providing up to 200 additional kilometers depending on the terrain.
    • – Acerbis 23-liter tank: Replaces the original tank on the standard Ténéré 700 version.
