The Ténéré Spirit Experience took advantage of the Aveyronnaise Classic to invite its partners and ambassadors to participate in this legendary race, supported by the Mutuelle des Motards, as well as in its new show: Le Grand Bivouac.

To officially kick off this first show, Loïc Desmazes explains what the Aveyronnaise Classic means to the volunteers, their historic partnership with the Mutuelle des Motards, and the organization’s desire to contribute to the local ecosystem. Geoffrey Anglaret also had the privilege of welcoming other distinguished guests to the set: Stéphane Peterhansel, Marc Bourgeois, Loïc Minaudier, Matt Adventure, Alexandre Kowalski, and Marc Tibi from the Mutuelle des Motards.

Join us for over 20 minutes of discussions about the connection between enduro and Rally-Raid, the learning and improvement of off-road riding and navigation skills, as well as the topic of safety in competition.

After seven grueling days of racing for the competitors and their machines, the Ténéré Yamaha Rally team and our Ténéré Spirit Experience riders take you inside the race as if you were there.

Discover the very essence of TransAnatolia through this exclusive series of seven episodes, each retracing an intense day of racing. This series, hosted by Stéphanie Frasson-Botton, a motorsports enthusiast, will take you behind the scenes of the Ténéré Spirit Experience.

EPISODE 0 – Pre-Race

Stéphanie took our followers deep into each stage of the rally, revealing the challenges of the route, the conditions on the ground, and the team’s work behind the scenes. She also introduced the key players who contributed to the success of this adventure. Each episode, published on Instagram and Facebook, allowed fans of the Ténéré Spirit Experience to discover the adventure from a new angle.

In the first episode of INSIDE Ténéré Spirit Experience, Stéphanie introduces us to the riders who will participate in the Race, including our influencers BLKMRKT and Clara CTO.

She also took the opportunity to give us a few words about the specific Rally-Raid packages.

EPISODE 1 – First turns of the wheels

Race day and what is more a special than this feeling for the many riders who are taking part in their first Rally-Raid.

This is particularly the case for our two intrepid influencers who share their impressions of this day with us in a fine mood!

EPISODE 2 – Gaining altitude

Another busy stage in which two liaison sections, 178.33 km of special and altitudes of over 3,000 meters are intertwined, as told by Stéphanie and Clara CTO.

Jérome Clastre, a Raid Category rider within the Ténéré Spirit Expérience Structure which is accompanying him in his Rally-Raid adventure, was clearly blown away by the landscapes of this second stage.

In the Racing category, Alessandro Botturi finished 2nd overall, Mattéo Drusiani followed him with a 3rd position. Attilio Fert and Nicolas Charlier finished in 5th and 7th positions. Our female rider Sonia Barbot closed the day with a nice 17th place.

EPISODE 3 – Happiness on the slopes

A stage which had longer specials for our riders.

According to BLKMRKT it was his best day ever on a motorcycle, not just of the year but of his life as a biker. Small crash without serious impact for Clara CTO.

Hugo Haben talks to us about his role within the bivouac and the Ténéré Spirit Expérience team.

In the Racing category, Alessandro Botturi finished 3rd overall and Mattéo Drusiani tells us about his day after which he finished in 4th position. Nicolas Charlier finished 6th, whilst Attilio Fert is happy today with
7th position. Our female rider Sonia Barbot finished this 3rd stage with a 23rd place.

Distinctive paths lead to Rally-Raid glory

Becoming a distinguished Rally-Raid rider with the Ténéré Spirit Experience is an epic journey and it’s one which beckons riders from a rich variety of backgrounds. The elite level riders and highly valued clients involved in our growing project have come into our sport from a wide array of disciplines and that’s exactly how it should be…

Given the expertise, training, and time commitments required to participate competently in Rally-Raid, it is rarely the initial path taken by young riders – although there are always exceptions to the rule.

Many riders start their love affair with two wheels on pushbikes, minibikes, pit bikes and pee wee dirt bikes before making their way up to a competitive level in road-racing, supermotard, trials, enduro, motocross, supercross and other formats of racing.

The manager of the Ténéré Yamaha Rally Team and the leader of the Ténéré Spirit Experience programme, Marc Bourgeois, is a highly experienced rider himself, with a long career at the top level in enduro behind him. His professional highlights included 15 podium finishes in the Enduro World Championship and becoming ISDE World Champion, before he became a Rally-Raid instructor and Team Manager at the highest level.

Meanwhile Ténéré Spirit Experience instructor Loïc Minaudier is a high experienced off-road, enduro and Rally-Raid competitor who also competes in the Dakar as a co-driver in the Cars category. Ténéré Spirit Experience customer Nicolas Charlier is a competitive supermoto and enduro rider, who participated in the Rallye du Maroc in the SSV class before making a highly successful two-wheeled Rally-Raid debut with us at the Africa Eco Race in January 2024.

Team manager Bourgeois takes up the story, explaining, “There are many, many top riders who have made these transitions between formats. If we refer back to the previous Yamaha Dakar programme, with the American rider Andrew Short, he was a specialist in supercross and motocross too. He did two years with us, with the official Yamaha Rally Team on the 450cc. We can talk about other previous riders too, like Stéphane Peterhansel, who rode the old Super Ténéré and before that was already a professional rider with very good skills in enduro.”

He continues, “These riders come into Rally-Raid from different backgrounds with some common skills, having practiced motorcycle riding at a high level, in disciplines like trials, enduro, motocross or supercross, but in the end we all have the same passions and motivations… To discover new landscapes, to have that sensation of liberty, to explore and ride in vast open spaces.”

The Ténéré Spirit Experience is all about encouraging riders of all backgrounds and ability levels to try Rally-Raid for themselves. Our Yamaha-approved training centres help top level riders prepare for competition but also welcome beginners who may not have previously excelled in another format of riding or racing, allowing them to take the first steps on the path to attending a Rally as a rider.

An inclusive approach – all are welcome

Bourgeois states, “It’s very helpful if you already have a good level of riding in one discipline, but in the end it is a pleasure to just ride and to discover Rally-Raid. You then need to try it and see if you like it, but 85% or 90% of riders who try it find it very special. The freedom… new riders just love it and they want to continue.”

He adds, “It’s also about learning to play under new rules, because in the end Rally-Raid follows established rules, to ride with the roadbook. So it’s about learning that common language to be able to ride and to know where you need to go. It’s like a game. So that’s a challenge to learn again, even if you are already a good rider in enduro, motocross or trials you need to take some lessons with an instructor or to begin with an easy rally to understand how it works.”

Bourgeois has also managed and witnessed first-hand the evolution of Pol Tarrés’ career from arriving into the Rally-Raid scene in 2022 as a well-recognised and successful trials and hard enduro champion. Even for a rider of Pol’s ability and prowess he had a lot to learn when he made the switch to competing in the desert…

“Pol for example was already a very good trials and enduro rider before he started riding in Rallies,” says Bourgeois, “So he already had really good knowledge and expertise of competition. Pol started on the journey into Rally-Raid with us and that was something completely new for him. He started in the Tunisia Desert Challenge and that was an event full of discovery for him. There were some mistakes and so many emotions. He got the taste for it, after a few kilometres, a few days. After the event he worked more on the navigation and then he liked it, that new sensation, of the freedom in the desert and to ‘play’ with navigation equipment.”

“It’s an adventure that produces really special sensations and emotion. You have to become part of a team in order to achieve a good result,” comments Bourgeois.

That is exactly what Tarrés did, on his way to winning the 2023 Transanatolia and the 2024 Morocco Desert Challenge titles.

the importance of teamwork

Bourgeois concludes, “In other disciplines of course the team are doing important work in the background, but in Rally-Raid it is different. At the Africa Eco Race for example it is 12 days and you need a strong team there to support you as a rider. Strong logistics, strong mechanics, strong management, strong stock controller, because you need to be able to solve problems quickly, in just a few minutes. So it’s a special sport and the feeling with the entire crew is unique.”

Many of the Ténéré Spirit Experience customers who join us in participation at events such as the Africa Eco Race, the Carta Rallye, the Morocco Desert Challenge and Transanatolia are enthusiasts and regular riders of touring bikes, adventure bikes, supermoto bikes, quad bikes or dirtbikes of a wide variety. All have a hunger for adventure and all are welcome.

They are passionate about motorcycles, have very different backgrounds, but share a common goal: to participate in a Rally Raid riding a Ténéré 700. Destination Rally Raid is a series of six articles featuring the stories of riders who have fallen in love with the world of off-road adventures.

EPISODE 2 - Two Is Better

Sonia Barbot, a graphic designer by profession, has lived a life deeply rooted in her passion for motorcycling. From her early adventures on childhood trails to competing in the French Championship, she has always sought to push her limits.

Today, she is preparing for new challenges in rally raid alongside her partner in life and on the tracks, Donaïg, combining passion, adventure, and determination. Dive into her captivating world where every race is a new exploration.

Can you present yourself ?

Hi there! I’m Sonia Barbot, I’m 40 years old, a graphic designer by profession, and a mother to a fourteen-year-old boy. I spent ten years competing in the French Road Rally Championship.

When did your passion for off-road begin?

It’s been a little while.
When I turned 10, my dadfound a small motocross bike for me. My parents got a divorce and when I was going to my dad’s,I was doing a little bit of riding the trail around the house. Until I was 16, because I got my 125cc license and continued riding a bit on trails. Then there was a second phase where I focused on track and road riding, completely forgetting about off-road.

And that passion returned in 2018 with the opportunity to participate in the GS Trophy France. That experience reignited my desire to explore, travel the world, and even consider getting back into competition.

The transition from Road Rally to Trail riding

Do you share this passion with your partner, Donaïg? Do you often ride together?

Yes, absolutely! We ride together whenever we can; we enjoy the same things. So, we often set out on little adventures together on our Ténérés. Whenever we can, we pack our bags and head out. Whether it’s enduro or other challenges, we both enjoy the thrill of new adventures.It’s quite fun. We really ride together.

How do you handle safety ?

Well, up until now, we never really questioned it because we’re often together. We don’t take unnecessary risks because it’s just for adventure, a ride, etc. But now, for the Rally Raid, we ask ourselves we need to consider what happens if someone gets injured, how we manage the situation, especially since we’ve planned to ride together.

Afterward, we also have to think about what happens if one of us gets lost or if there’s a crash and the other isn’t aware of it.

You really have to trust the race direction and organization because everything is planned for safety. So, if someone gets lost or if there’s an accident and you’re unaware, you shouldn’t go looking for the other person. Instead, you should continue your route to the end of the stage.

Adventuring the Rally Raids

Donaïg, what do you think about it ?

Donaïg: As for crashing, honestly, I don’t really think about it, even though it does happen from time to time. But if it were to happen…

I would stop. But we’ve been told that we should keep going, whether it’s a liaison or a special stage, as Sonia mentioned. Still, I always keep an eye on Sonia; I’m always looking out for her.

What do you like most about the Ténéré 700 ?

Sonia: I bought my bike in 2019 when it first came out, without even test riding it. What attracted me first was the design and what it represented—the Dakar, the desert, that whole ideology. Once I started riding it, I was drawn to its simplicity—no electronic assistance, which means fewer chances of breakdowns. And the engine, the CP2, is fantastic. I knew it from the MT-07; it’s torquey, fun, and powerful enough for off-road. It’s a bike that gives me a lot of riding pleasure.

Donaïg : In reality it’s the simplicity and the lack ofElectronique. And the engine is friendly, with torque low in the RPMs, so it’s great for off-road riding. Plus, I’m fortunate to have Kayaba Factory suspensions from OTS Factory, which make the bike much more dynamic and easier to handle in events like rallies, where the speeds are significantly higher.

Tell me more about your projects ?

Sonia: We’re actually looking to get into Rally Raid to explore this new discipline. Sonia: I have a background in road rallying, and Donaïg is a former high-level athlete, so I think we have a pretty solid foundation. We’re aware that this is a challenging endeavor, and we want to do it within a good structure. That’s why we want to join the official Yamaha Ténéré Spirit Experience team for the Transanatolia Rally in Turkey. But before that, we’ve committed to the Swank Rally in Sardinia to learn the basics of rallying.

To make this happen, we need to find financial partners to finalize the project. The Mutuelle des Motards has been supporting us for a few years, but we’re still missing half of the budget to make it a reality. A magical Moroccan adventure

It was a memorable visit to the north of Africa for the 2024 Morocco Desert Challenge for the Ténéré Yamaha Rally Team and our adventurous Ténéré Spirit Experience clients, with Pol Tarrés securing the overall victory, accompanied by some daring Ténéré riders in the Raid and Racing categories.

Pol Tarrés makes MDC history

Star rider Tarrés was in absolutely sparkling form throughout the race, taking the win on six of the eight stages, including the timed special on the final stage, earning him the GC victory. After more than 30 hours of racing Tarrés’ winning margin over his closest competitor was 2h 21’ 06’’, on his GYTR-equipped Ténéré 700 World Rally machine. His overall success in the general classification saw him make history by becoming the first rider to secure victory at the rally on a twin-cylinder adventure bike. Tarrés’ remarkable performance was all the more impressive given that he was competing against riders on single-cylinder 450cc prototypes, which have previously dominated the race.

Over eight stages, covering 3000km across some of the most challenging terrain on earth, Tarrés set the standards throughout the Morocco Desert Challenge, leading the rally from the off and taking an aggressive approach, which ultimately paid off in style.

Customers supported by the official team

Courtesy of the Ténéré Spirit Experience, French rider Stephane Poulet rode alongside Tarrés in Morocco and he was another high achiever at the event. Poulet helped to secure a Yamaha one-two in the M1.2 class (601cc & above), finishing the Morocco Desert Challenge in a respectable 17th place in the GC, with a best stage result of 12^th on the final day of racing.

Meanwhile in the raid category Ténéré Spirit Experience customers such as Alexandre Gomes, Franck Mutin, Marc Girardin, Laurent Edouin and Christophe Edouin enjoyed an incredible adventure. They had full support from the Ténéré Yamaha Rally Team, enjoying maintenance of their Ténéré bikes, interaction with professional riders, navigation and riding expertise from the best in the game, logistics management and first-class hospitality.

An excellent balance sheet

Summarising the visit to Morocco, Team Manager of the Ténéré Yamaha Rally Team Marc Bourgeois stated, “Pol is still relatively new to rally raid, so he is still learning, but his attitude is superb, and he is always learning. The bike was amazing and allowed Pol to ride at his best. I want to thank the whole team for their efforts at this rally.”

“Honestly, this whole event has been amazing, and securing a Yamaha one-two in class with Stephane caps off an excellent rally for us. It has also been great to have the Ténéré Spirit Experience Raid category riders with us, enjoying the thrills and spills of the rally raid along with the team without the pressure of racing against the clock. The 2024 Morocco Desert Challenge has been epic, and we are already planning for our next race!”

Next up for Bourgeois, Tarrés and the Ténéré Yamaha Rally Team is a trip to Turkey for the Transanatolia, from August 31 to September 7.

Further, Faster, Stronger: GYTR Ténéré 700 World Raid Performance Kits

Developed directly from Yamaha’s Rally Racing programme, GYTR Ténéré 700 World Raid kits bring race performance to the public.

Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing for Adventure

Having been introduced to great acclaim in 2022, Yamaha’s rally-inspired Ténéré 700 World Raid has proved a hit with riders looking for the ultimate go-anywhere middleweight adventure bike.

Now, Yamaha have developed a range of GYTR® (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing) performance parts in collaboration with the Yamaha Rally team. The goal: creating the kits to turn the Ténéré World Raid into a true competition motorcycle with higher engine performance and a chassis tuned to deliver true rally capabilities.

Available through European Yamaha dealerships, the three separate kits combine to create the ultimate Ténéré 700 World Raid. The Performance kit is easy to install and adds the GYTR rally seat and footrest set, while increasing engine performance with the GYTR ECU, Akrapovič full titanium exhaust system and air filter kit.

The Handling kit focuses on handling and off-road stability, replacing the Ténéré 700 World Raid’s stock wheels and suspension. The Rally kit takes things even further with a host of high-end rally components, including large capacity fuel tanks, a genuine rally developed handlebar kit and screen, allowing the fitment of road book instruments, high performance headlights and all the components required to participate in competitive rally raids.

The GYTR Adventure kits are developed for racing purposes only and are available to all Ténéré 700 World Raid riders looking to ride their machines in the most demanding of conditions.

A selection of these parts will also be available separately for any standard Ténéré 700 customers looking to fit specific GYTR Performance parts to their bike. Check with your dealer and at Yamaha-racing.com/gytr/ which items will fit your Ténéré 700 and meet your needs.

Ténéré 700 World Raid GYTR Performance kit

Developed to unlock the full adventure potential of the Ténéré 700 World Raid’s 689cc CP2 engine, the GYTR Performance kit utilizes the stock wiring harness but adds a lightweight race exhaust system from Akrapovič, with headers, slip-on muffler and end cap all constructed from titanium. Designed to optimize exhaust gas flow, the system works in conjunction with the GYTR air filter kit, comprising of a bespoke case and filter element, and the GYTR ECU, which adjusts ignition and fuel mapping to maximize power and torque output and delivery. The GYTR performance parts combine to increase performance by up to 9hp.

Alongside the engine tuning parts, the kit also contains a rally-spec seat and footrest kit. The one-piece GYTR Rally Seat replaces the standard two-part unit. Proudly featuring the GYTR logo, the saddle is made from grippy material for maximum control in even the most challenging conditions.

As standard, the Rally Seat increases seat height by 25 mm, however it has been designed to allow the rider to cut the foam and create a customized shape to meet their own ergonomic requirements. The Rally Seat works in conjunction with the wide GYTR Footrest Set, which feature a heavily serrated design to aid grip and an open pattern aimed at reducing the accumulation of mud in extreme conditions.

The final component in the Performance kit is a clutch cover upgrade, with a GYTR branded billet aluminum split cover. It allows easy access to the clutch’s inner workings for quick servicing between rally stages.

The GYTR Performance kit has been developed for easy installation, allowing the stock wiring harness, wheels and ABS system to be retained.

Ténéré 700 World Raid GYTR Handling kit

Taking things a step further, the GYTR Handling kit focuses on getting the chassis of the Ténéré 700 World Raid rally-ready, with new race-specification wheels and suspension combining to create a motorcycle prepared to take on the roughest terrains with outstanding handling and stability.

Race-developed 48 mm diameter KYB closed cartridge forks feature DLC coated tubes and have an increased stroke of 270 mm, while a mid-speed valve allows for adjustment over a much wider range. To enable the fitting of the upgraded front suspension, the kit also includes a GYTR triple clamp assembly, machined from billet aluminum 6082 anodised in black. The triple clamp is matched with a compact, yet fully adjustable steering damper, manufactured by Scotts Performance. With 25 settings, which can be adjusted on the fly, the damper has been developed to increase stability and reduce rider fatigue when riding long stints on rough terrain. The triple clamp kit also contains a bracket to keep the standard steering damper. At the rear, a fully adjustable Paioli shock absorber replaces the stock item, featuring high and low-flow rate pistons to optimize compression and rebound damping for improved rider feedback.

GYTR rally wheels, prepared by Haan Wheels using Excel rims and machined hubs in aluminum, reduce weight, while there’s also a new braking system front and rear with Brembo calipers and bigger 300mm disc at the front, with a 267mm rear disc mated to the stock caliper. The GYTR Handling kit ECU allows for deletion of the ABS system and immobilizer. Also included in the kit is a lightweight chain and sprocket set with revised ratios and a new radiator assembly consisting of a bigger radiator and separate oil cooler, as well as all the hoses and brackets required for installation. The kit also includes a black anodised GYTR radiator guard to protect against branches, stones and other debris.

The final element of the Ténéré 700 GYTR Handling kit is the GYTR high front fender for that authentic ‘Dakar’ look and additional protection from whatever the stages throw at you.

Ténéré 700 World Raid GYTR Rally kit

For the ultimate in endurance and rally performance, the GYTR Rally kit adds larger capacity fuel tanks and all the equipment required to fit the roadbook and GPS instrument equipment used in competitive rally raids.

New front tanks, left and right, are made from nylon painted in black and have a transparent ‘window’ to allow for a quick and easy visual check on fuel levels. The tanks are also fitted with dedicated race filler caps to allow for rapid refueling. The kit also includes auxiliary tanks which can be fitted to the rear of the machine, increasing the overall fuel capacity to a gigantic 37.6 litres.

The GYTR handlebar kit comes with a quick-action throttle assembly, hand guards and brackets to allow the rider to attach their personal navigation equipment. The Rally kit also includes a new set of indicator and warning lights, a headlight tower kit with four high-performance spotlights and a new polycarbonate screen to provide protection to both the rider and the headlights.

Completing the full rally raid transformation, the Rally kit comes with a GYTR carbon fibre and Kevlar skid plate and a comprehensive sticker kit to create a replica inspired by the upcoming GYTR Africa Eco Rally machine.

This kit also includes a GYTR wiring harness, designed to facilitate the fitting of the kit parts. The loom is lighter than standard and required to remove the ABS and immobilizer.
