RALLY-RAID
MOTORCYCLE RALLY RAID
🧭 What is a Rally Raid?
A motorcycle rally raid is an off-road endurance event that takes place over several days (usually 5 to 15 days).
Each day, riders complete one or more stages consisting of:
Timed special stages on varied terrain (sand, gravel, fast tracks, dunes, etc.)
Liaisons, which connect the bivouacs or the start of each stage.
Unlike a traditional speed race, a rally raid rewards consistency, navigation skills, and the ability to manage both the rider and the machine.
The most renowned events include the Dakar Rally and the Africa Eco Race, among others, legendary competitions that embody the true spirit of adventure and endurance.
The main difficulty: navigating with the road book
How it works: The road book (paper or electronic) is a scroll of visual instructions.
Each box contains:
Partial and total distance
A simplified diagram of the intersection or the course to follow
Notes (danger, change in terrain, landmarks, etc.)
The rider follows these instructions using a tripmaster (a precise odometer) and sometimes an electronic compass.
A roadbook is divided into three columns, read from left to right. Each column provides key information: distance, direction, and notes or danger symbols.
The symbols and icons are universal, meaning that once you’ve mastered them, you can anticipate turns, obstacles, and terrain changes before you even reach them.
💡 Goal: Stay on the right course, find the correct tracks, and validate the mandatory waypoints, all while managing your speed and endurance.
This method requires intense concentration and quick reading, especially over varied terrain.
That’s the magic (and the challenge) of rally raid: you don’t follow a trail, you create your own route.
Rally Raid categories
There are two main categories, allowing everyone to participate according to their level and goals:
Designed for riders who want to experience the rally without the pressure of the stopwatch.
You navigate using either GPX tracks or a roadbook, following the same routes as the racing riders, but without any timing or ranking.
The focus is on discovery, progression, and navigation experience, with professional support and guidance throughout the adventure.
This is also the ideal category for:
Discover how the rally works
Familiarize yourself with the road book
Assess your level before committing to competition

A motorcycle ready for long-distance adventure, reliable and comfortable
This is the competitive category of rally raids: timed stages, road book navigation, managing effort and mechanics.
The ranking is based on the total time of the timed special stages, with penalties for navigation errors or late starts.
This category requires more advanced technical skills, but it remains accessible to all motivated, well-prepared, and supervised pilots.
