The terrain: Patagonia’s Lake District, between the Andes and the steppe
The route runs at the foot of the Andes, in the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro, between two major national parks: Lanín National Park to the north and Nahuel Huapi National Park to the south. Created in 1934, Nahuel Huapi is Argentina’s oldest national park.
What makes this area unique by motorcycle is the contrast. In just a few dozen kilometers, you go:
- from the humid Andean forest, home to coihues, lengas (whose foliage turns red in autumn) and Andean cypresses;
- to the Patagonian steppe, to the east—dry, open, wind-swept—where vegetation stays low and the horizons are immense;
- via glacial lakes, with deep, crystal-clear waters framed by peaks.
